11 officers were shot, 5 fatally, this Thursday evening. The shootings began with sniper fire from at least 2 suspects just before 9 p.m. Central Time. The shootings started at the tail end of a demonstration over the police shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge on Tuesday and Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minnesota on Wednesday.
After an initial ambush and exchange of gunfire, an hours long standoff began which ultimately ended in the suspect being killed by an explosive on a bomb robot. “We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was,” Chief David Brown said. “Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. The suspect is deceased as a result of detonating the bomb.”
Investigators have identified the dead suspect: 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas.
