The Dallas police shooting brought police deaths to an all-time low, with 34 being murdered for the year to date, on pace for 55 for the year. 2015 saw 56 murdered in the line of duty, down from 139 in 1976 and far below another spike during Prohibition of Alcohol when officer deaths per year reached over 200. Interestingly, police deaths spiked during alcohol prohibition and in the years following the declaration of the War on Drugs, which is often attributed to a 1971 speech given by President Nixon.
Meanwhile, 650 people have been killed by the police so far in 2016, down from 682 killed by this day in 2015.
